IPL 2025 at the Halfway Mark: Holy Trinity Rising & Giants Falling?

As we hit the halfway mark of IPL 2025, things have taken a very filmy turn. Each team’s played around 7-8 matches, and the points table is looking jhatka-worthy. Some unexpected heroes are rising, and a few seasoned giants are stumbling. Let’s dive straight into the masala of this season so far.

Doing Good!

Is This The Year Of The ‘HOLY TRINITY’? DC, RCB, PBKS

This might just be THE YEAR. Yes, we’re talking about the so-called “Holy Trinity”. If you have been following the IPL and casually scroll through instagram and X, you know which teams are we referring to. The term Holy Trinity includes the likes of Delhi Capitals (DC), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), and Punjab Kings (PBKS). This title is been humorously given to them as these are the only three teams that haven’t won a single IPL yet.

But I think their time is finally coming.

But guess what? DC and RCB are sitting pretty at the top with 12 points each. In my opinion, this is the strongest and the most ‘balanced’ eleven that we are seeing. They finally have a bowling lineup that can put pressure on you. Hazelwood is in superb form and the spinners Krunal and Suyash Sharma are quite good with their variations.

Delhi Capitals started with 5 wins in a row and are top of the table. They may not have the biggest names on paper but nothing can beat you when your team is clicking. This is what is happening with DC. Axar Patel is leading from the front. KL is rejuvenated and Kuldeep is firing well.

Now let’s move to the team that does have some big names, PBKS isn’t far behind. Reuniting the Ponting-Shreyas duo has been benefiting them. However, the lack of consistency we often associate with PBKS is still visible and we hope that they change that in the next half.

From power-packed performances to clutch wins, these three have finally decided enough is enough — no more memes, no more jokes. It’s redemption time.

Gujarat Titans

Nehra Ji’s GT is looking great, yet again. I don’t know how this team manages to be up there every time. In the 3 seasons they have played, they have won 1, and made the finals in the other. This year too, they are looking real good.

Sai Sudharshan or what I call him, Mr Consistent has the orange cap. The guy hardly fails. Gill and Butler are complimenting him. On the bowling front, Rashid has been a little underwhelming by his standards but Prasidh has been a revelation.

Can Do Better: MI, KKR, LSG

Mumbai Indians

The two most successful franchises, Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) (we talk later)  are not having their dream season. MI, like every other season, had a shaky start. They lost 4 of their first 5 games but bounced back hard with 4 wins on the trot. Bumrah as usual is the key in their bowling while Santner is fitting in nicely.

With Surya, Tilak and Hardik they still have the firepower in batting too, but again, consistency will be key. I really want to see Rickleton and Jacks show some form.

Kolkata Knight Riders

Another team that can really do better in the latter half of the season are the Kolkata Knight Riders. The  3 time champions KKR, have started slow. They got the firepower, but this doesn’t look like a well knit team. They are 7th in the table and while they do have better chances than CSK, playoffs looks difficult from here. However, they have done this before back in 2021 when they made the finals after losing 5 of the first seven. For this to happen, their marquee signing, Venkatesh Iyer, needs to play a key role.

Lucknow Super Giants

Now let’s talk about LSG

In this years, auction LSG made headlines as they splurged all out for Rishabh Pant, getting him for 27 CR. Pant replaced their previous captain, KL Rahul. While the latter is finding his groove again, we cannot say the same about Pant.

The Indian wicket keeper’s performance has been very underwhelming. He has hardly got going and even when he has, his strike rate has been disappointing. But thanks to Nicky P and Markaram, the team is in better state. Pooran is in the form of his life. He boasts of a strike rate of 205 and is in the hunt for the Orange Cap. Markram has impressed with both bowling and batting.

A special mention to Digvesh Rathi who, with his Narine like action and unique celebration has impressed everyone.

Down And Out!

RR’s Auction Blunder – Paying the Price

Rajasthan Royals (RR), the inaugural champs from 2008, are currently living their worst auction regrets. Not retaining match-winners like Jos Buttler, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Trent Boult is now looking like a disaster class in squad planning.

They sit 8th on the table and have lost back-to-back heartbreakers — twice failing to chase down just 9 runs. Add to that the pressure on Dhruv Jurel, who was retained for a massive ₹11 Cr but hasn’t delivered — the fans are getting restless.

SRH – Victims of Their Own Hype?

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) were the talk of the town after their explosive season in 2024. The orange army scored runs for fun, courtesy Abhishek and Travis head. The auction went pretty well too, they did addressed their bowling concerns and added a handy Ishan Kishan at the top order. The fans were hopeful of the team crossing the 300! Mark. This is where, I believe, things started going downhill.

Since then, the pressure of hitting those crazy numbers seems to have taken a toll. Batting meltdowns and over-attacking strategies have led to avoidable losses. Maybe it’s time to breathe and play some old-school sensible cricket?

CSK – The Template Is Broken

CSK, on the other hand, are in a serious rut. Nothing seems to be clicking — batting collapses, bowling woes, and a general no-josh vibe. The whole template that CSK depeneded upon is now pretty much outdated. Thala fans are worried, and honestly, so are we. Dhoni, made captain yet again middle of the tournament shows that there is no clear plan but to rely on his midas touch. However, the magic is missing, and unless they pull off a miracle, this might be a forgettable season for the yellow army.

They are currently 10th in the league.
