There is a famous Marvel-based show called What If…?, an animated series that reimagines some of the most defining moments in Marvel’s comic book history. Now, that’s fiction. But what if I told you that football had its own what if moment—one that could have made the career of Neymar Jr very different to say the least?
Few players have displayed as much talent and potential as Neymar Jr. For years, fans have known Neymar Jr. as the dazzling superstar who lit up Barcelona, forming the legendary MSN trio with Messi and Suárez. However, recent revelations suggest that during that period, Neymar wasn’t actually set on joining Barça. Instead, he was on the verge of signing for Bayern Munich, courtesy Pep Guardiola!
The Late-Night Knock on Neymar’s Door
In a recent podcast, ‘Podpah’, Neymar shared a stunning story from 2013, when he was one of the most sought-after young talents in world football. While many believed Barcelona was always his destined club, Neymar admitted that he had serious offers from multiple European giants—including a direct approach from Pep Guardiola.
According to Neymar, the moment was surreal. Late one night, his father repeatedly called him, urging him to open the door. Half-asleep and confused, Neymar finally got up—only to find Pep Guardiola and a translator standing outside. Guardiola, who was on a sabbatical after leaving Barcelona, had personally come to convince Neymar to join his next project.

Guardiola’s Grand Plan for Neymar
Guardiola wasted no time. He pulled out his laptop and showed Neymar exactly how he would fit into his tactical system, making a bold promise:
“If you don’t score 60 goals in a season, I will change my name.”
At the time, Guardiola had not yet announced his next club, but he hinted at Bayern Munich as his next destination. He reassured Neymar that despite Munich’s cold weather, he would take care of him and help him become the best player in the world.
Why Neymar Chose Barcelona Instead
Despite Guardiola’s compelling pitch and strong offers from Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, Neymar ultimately followed his heart. He had always admired Ronaldinho and dreamed of playing alongside Lionel Messi, which made Barcelona his ideal destination. Even though he could have earned more at Real Madrid, his love for Barça sealed the deal.
What Could Have Been?
Pep, we all know is a tactical mastermind. The German manger is not only a serial winner with multiple titles under his name, but has also taken several players to new heights, including some of the biggest names in football like Lionel Messi, Raheem Sterling, Rodri and Kevin De Bruyne.
With a player as gifted as Neymar, the possibilities under Pep could have been extraordinary. That’s not to say Neymar hasn’t had a phenomenal career—he has a Champions League title and multiple league trophies to his name. But we all know the level of talent he possessed. Had it not been for injuries, and with Guardiola’s guidance, he might have reached even greater heights.
But alas, that will remain just another what if in football history.
